Ambitious, unpublished romance writers take note.

The Sixth Annual Fool For Love First Chapter Contest is under way. Sponsored by the Virginia Romance Writers, the contest is an opportunity for writers to have their work criticized. It's open to all romance authors unpublished in book-length fiction. The entry fee is $20. For an entry form and rules, send a self- addressed stamped envelope to either F. Mason; VRW Contest; 406 Arabian Circle; Yorktown, VA 23693 or L. Bradner; VRW Contest; Rt. 1 Box 376; Charlotte Court House, Va. 23923. The deadline for submissions (and this is not a joke) is April 1, 1994.

Also in April, the Louisiana State University Press, one of the most inventive and ambitious university presses in the country, will reissue new trade paperback editions of some of the best out-of-print Southern fiction. What a fine idea! The first list of six titles includes three of my own favorite novels: Fred Chappell's "The Gaudy Place," Lee Smith's "The Last Day the Dogbushes Bloomed" and George Garrett's "Do, Lord, Remember Me." The others are Peter Taylor's story collection, "The Windows of Thornton," Ellen Douglas' "The Rock Cried Out" and Elizabeth Spencer's "The Voice at the Back Door."
