HOKIES SET TO HIRE TRANQUILL

Virginia Tech is expected to name Gary Tranquill its new offensive coordinator today, sources said Sunday.

Tech has called a news conference on campus this morning. Coach Frank Beamer would not comment when asked if Tranquill, quarterbacks coach of the NFL's Cleveland Browns, had accepted a position on his staff.

Tranquill, reached Sunday at his Cleveland-area home, also declined to comment.

"I'd rather not say anything until [today]," he said. "I can't say anything right now, one way or the other."

Tranquill has spent the past three seasons on Bill Belichick's staff, working with Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde, among others. He served as Virginia's quarterbacks coach from 1987-90, gaining a reputation as an astute play-caller and a strong recruiter.

At Virginia, Tranquill coached future NFL quarterbacks Shawn Moore and Scott Secules. Moore finished fourth in the 1990 Heisman Trophy balloting. UVa's offense set a record by scoring 50 or more points in four games that year.

Tech, which set several school offensive records en route to a 9-3 record in '93, has been searching for an offensive coordinator since Rickey Bustle joined South Carolina's staff two weeks ago. Tranquill was Beamer's first choice for the job and interviewed in Blacksburg on Jan. 12-13.

Tranquill would have to take a pay cut to work for Tech, but indicated last week that money would not be an overriding factor in his decision.
