TECH RETIRES PYNE'S 73

Virginia Tech has retired the No. 73 jersey of center Jim Pyne, the Hokies' first unanimous football All-American.

A public ceremony will be held at halftime of the Hokies' men's basketball game against Louisville on Thursday at Cassell Coliseum.

Pyne is the fourth Tech football player and eighth Hokie athlete to have had a jersey retired. The others are football players Carroll Dale (No. 84), Frank Loria (10) and Bruce Smith (78); basketball players Dell Curry (30), Bimbo Coles (12) and Renee Dennis (44); and volleyball player Lisa Pikalek (12).

"It's a very fitting honor," Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "He'll join some pretty good names there from the football side."

Tech's football team will officially receive the trophy from the Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl at halftime of the men's basketball game against Southern Mississippi on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum. Bowl chairman Mike McCarthy will be in Blacksburg to make the presentation. - Staff report
