REMAINS IDENTIFIED AS MISSING JOCKEY

Human remains found in mud flats along San Francisco Bay were identified Monday as the decomposed body of jockey Ron Hansen.

Alameda County supervising coroner Dan Apperson said dental records were used to identify Hansen, whose remains were pulled from the Hayward mud flats last week. The 33-year-old jockey had been missing since an Oct. 2 car crash on the San Mateo Bridge.

The cause of death won't be known for another three to six weeks, Apperson said.

Police believe Hansen was driving his Jaguar when it smashed into a Toyota on the bridge at a speed as high as 100 mph. The Toyota skidded against the guard rail and flipped over, and its driver and passenger sustained moderate injuries.

Hansen, who won nearly 3,700 races and earned purses worth $36.6 million, also was known for his off-track antics. In one incident, he vowed to strip naked in the winner's circle if he won the 1990 Kentucky Derby. His mount, Video Ranger, finished fourth.
