OBIT CROSS, RAY E.
CROSS, Ray E., 77, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 23, 1994 in a
local hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from
the V. A. Regional Office. Mr. Cross was a lifetime member of the D. A. V.
(Chapter 3) and the American Legion. He was a volunteer at the V. A. Medical
Center in Salem, a Lieutenant of the Auxiliary Roanoke City Police Department
for 18 years, and a lifetime member of the National Order of Trench Rats
(Dugout 542). Mr. Cross was publicity chairman of the 246th Infantry Reunion
Committee for over 20 years. Surviving are his wife, Louise Wagner Cross; a
daughter and very special friend, Rebecca Carter Dyer and Skip Conner,
Roanoke; a grandson and his wife, K. Andrew and Cate Dyer, Hollywood, Fla.;
two sisters, Dorothy Donnley, Woodstown, N.J., Mary Leary, Covington; a
brother, Clyde Wilcher, Charlotte, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, from Oakey's
Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Wayne C. Harrison officiating. Interment will
follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family suggests memorial contributions be
made to the American Lung Association of Virginia (6318 Peters Cr. Rd., Suite
A-7, Roanoke, Va. 24019) or the American Cancer Society (P. O. Box 554,
Roanoke, Va. 24003-0554). Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's
Roanoke Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7
to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
