So frightful that for a few days, there were not many games going on.
Every local recreation department in the New River Valley was affected in some manner by last week's ice storm and the record-breaking cold that followed.
That meant some missed games and canceled activities because travel was difficult if not downright dangerous, especially at night early in the week.
Only Blacksburg had virtually no disruption of its sports leagues. Because of the town's compactness and because it got mostly rain - instead of sleet - roads remained passable, and most athletes were able to get to their events.
"No games have been postponed," said RICHARD JONES, a recreation supervisor at mid-week. "All scheduled events are still going on."
Jones added that some teams were having trouble getting their players who live outside Blacksburg to events.
The mostly smooth operation in Blacksburg was the exception, however. Christiansburg and Montgomery County canceled most of last week's basketball games. For much of the week, Radford did not have nighttime activities.
And the town of Pulaski had to move some basketball games to Pulaski County High School, located just outside of Dublin, because of heating problems in the town armory.
"We just got canceled," was the way TIM COONEY, the Montgomery County athletic supervisor, described the situation.
Things slowly returned to normal as the weather warmed, albeit slowly and slightly, and travel wore down the ice packs formed on roads and parking lots.
"I just hope we don't get any more bad weather," said CHUCK MUNCY, the athletic supervisor in Christiansburg. "Especially on a weekend. On Saturdays, we'll have 10 to 15 youth [basketball] games. And we have adult [basketball] games on Sunday."
\ ROUNDBALL REPORT: The triumvirate of Craft's Crew (10-0), Athlete's Choice (9-0) and Stevens Funeral Home (11-1) continue to rule the Pulaski Men's Basketball League.
The Crew is the two-time defending champion and a league record setter. Its 41-game winning streak and its five games over 100 points in a season are both records. And its scoring pace, 105.9 points per game, is nearly three points better than the league record of 103 set by Penn's Funeral Home in 1987.
Craft's Crew beat Slam Dunk Cards 74-54 behind 17 points from DAVID SMITH. It routed McDonald's 123-83 as SAMMY POINDEXTER (33) and Smith (26) combined for 59 points. And it downed Electroplate Rite 108-90 as DOREA JONES had 32 points, including seven 3-pointers.
The Crew still must face both of the teams chasing it, however.
In other league action last week, RANDY OLVERSON of Stevens had the top scoring performance of the week with 51 points in an 80-58 win over C&L Campers.
Olverson leads the league in scoring at 28.2 points per game and in 3-pointers with 67.
\ ANTHONY AKERS of Slam Dunk Cards is second in both statistical categories, averaging 27.4 ppg with 50 treys.
And EPR's MIKE AUSTIN had a career-best 40 points in his team's loss to Craft's Crew.
After three games, JIM BAHR of Federal Mogul is the scoring mogul in the Blacksburg Men's B Basketball League.
Bahr is averaging 18.3 ppg, over a point more a game than the trio of players tied for second. BRUCE RIGGENS of The Stupid, GRANT WALKER of Travel Squad and DON STOKES of Shelor's are all at 17.0 ppg. And right behind them is RODNEY CRAWFORD of Federal Mogul at 16.6 ppg.
Through two weeks of play, Interior Design Nutrition (2-0) is the only unbeaten team in the Blacksburg Women's Open Basketball League.
\ HOOPIN' IT UP: The Pulaski County competition in the 22nd Annual Elks National Hoop Shoot will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at Pulaski Middle School.
The contest is open to youths ages 8-13. Boys and girls compete in three age categories: 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. There is no charge to enter.
The youngest competitors will shoot from four feet in front of the foul line. The other two age groups shoot from the foul line.
Each shooter will have five warm-up shots and then will have 25 free-throw attempts.
Local winners qualify for the regionals, Feb. 5 in Roanoke.
For more information, call NORMAN KELLER, hoops shoot chairman, at 980-5100.
\ NASCAR TRIP: With all this cold weather, wouldn't it be nice to sit out in the warm spring sun for a few hours and watch some racing?
Christiansburg Parks and Recreation can help make that a reality. But you better act as fast as stock cars drive around the track.
Registration continues for a trip to the First Union 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina on April 17. Already about 10 people have signed up. This trip has sold out the last two years, and the seating capacity is 27.
The cost is $45. Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
For more information, call Chuck Muncy, supervisor of athletics, at 382-2349.
