140 SEEK BLACKSBURG CHIEF JOB

One hundred forty applicants from across the country have applied for the Blacksburg Police Chief's job, the town's manager said Tuesday.

The deadline for applications was Friday, and Town Manager Ron Secrist said he had not had a chance to look over them in detail yet.

He said he will take about three weeks to screen the applications and whittle the number down to 10 or less semifinalists.

Fifty-eight of the applicants - about 40 percent - are from Virginia, Secrist said.

Among them is interim police chief William Brown, a 23-year veteran of the department, Brown said. He has been captain since 1986, and filled the interim post in 1980 before DonCarey was hired.

The department has 76 employees and an annual budget of $2.8 million.

The department gained national accreditation last year, in what Carey, who left last month for Independence, Mo., called a crowning glory. "We highlighted that in the ad," Secrist said.

Secrist has said he hopes to make an appointment by April.
