The Knights scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back in a 62-44 Roanoke Valley District victory over host William Fleming on Tuesday in the opening game of a doubleheader at the Colonels' gym.
Fleming (7-4 overall, 3-2 in the district) didn't score its first points until there were 2 minutes, 28 seconds left in the first quarter. Fleming drew as close as it would when Ashaki Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 6:31 left in the half to make it 12-10.
But Cave Spring (13-1, 5-1) went on to score the next nine points, including a 3-pointer by Aimee Beightol, and Fleming was never closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Fleming was erratic offensively, which was part of its problem. But in its best sequence of the game, which came to open the second half, the Knights responded in kind when Fleming scored on five-straight possessions.
Beightol led the way for the Knights, scoring 20 points, and made all nine of her free throws. Her sister, Allison, chipped in 11 points and Cheryl Rhodes added 10. Cave Spring led by as many as 22 points.
The Knights capitalized on Fleming's 19 fouls by sinking 17 of 22 free throws.
Fleming was paced by Johnson and Kelly Irving, who had 12 points apiece.
