VIKINGS SLAY TERRIERS IN OT

When Northside's basketball team picked up 10 first-quarter fouls against William Byrd on Tuesday night, there was some concern as to whether the Vikings would have enough players to finish the game.

False alarm. One Viking, Nathan Hungate, was more than sufficient.

The senior guard poured in 32 points, 21 in the second half, as Northside outlasted Blue Ridge District opponent Byrd, 76-73, in overtime.

In the final 41 seconds, Hungate scored five points. He made a free throw to complete a three-point play (his third of the game), and both ends of a one-and-one. Byrd's Jeremy Obenchain narrowly missed a 3-point attempt in the game's final moments that would have led to a second overtime.

Hungate, who took over the playmaking duties when Justin Porterfield got into foul trouble, made several clever passes to post men Dana Gibson and Maurice Gibson, who contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively. When Hungate kept the ball, he repeatedly drove the baseline, scoring most of his 11 baskets from close range.

Northside, ranked second in Timesland, ran its record to 12-1 and remained undefeated in district play. Byrd dropped to 6-5, 1-2.

"We knew Hungate would penetrate, and we didn't do very well helping out," Byrd coach Paul Barnard said. "But at the other end, I thought we made some great plays."

Michael McGuire, who forced the overtime with a rainbow 25-footer, and Donald Childress led their team with 14 points each.

The first half was reminiscent of a traffic jam, as 28 fouls were called, an equal number for each team. "We weren't playing very good defense," Northside coach Bill Pope said.
