OBIT HAYES, E. PAUL
HAYES, E. Paul, 87, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 24, 1994, after a
brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth S. Hayes. Mr.
Hayes, an architect, began his career in 1929 with Smithey and Boynton in
Roanoke. In 1947, Mr. Hayes became a founding partner of Hayes, Seay, Mattern,
and Mattern, which is now one of the leading architectural and engineering
firms in the country. Throughout his long and productive career, Mr. Hayes
designed many landmarks throughout the state including the American Theater
Building and the 1929 Norfolk & Western general office building. He was an
emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects. He was also a 50-year
member of the Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge and the Kazim Temple and a
longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter,
Elizabeth Hayes Doyle, Elliston; one son, Edgar Paul Hayes, Jacksonville,
N.C.; four grandchildren, Francis P. Doyle, Elliston, E. Paul Hayes Jr.,
Sacramento, Calif., Elizabeth Doyle Teare, Alexandria, Frederick G. Hayes,
Jacksonville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Carter, Stephen, and
Megan Doyle. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel
10:30 a.m. Friday by Dr. Harry Y. Gamble. Entombment will be in Sherwood
Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made
to the Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke. The family will receive friends
Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
