A showy sandwich is sure to score big with diners. This "theme" hero features bread baked in a Wilton "First and Ten Football Pan." It is among hundreds of beautifully presented and inspiring recipes and ideas in the newly released "Wilton Entertaining: Appetizers to Desserts." Pan and book are available by calling (800) 772-7111 and could even arrive in time for Superbowl XXVIII baking if you request overnight or second-day delivery.
If you'd rather take a simpler approach, these hot dogs from "The Hot Dog Cookbook: The Weiner Work the World Awaited" (The Globe Pequot Press) are basic but far from boring. Self-proclaimed frankfurter fanatic Jess Brallier uses hot dogs in, as and under everything from quiche and canapes to chutney - all of which he suggests should be served with beer. He also includes a liberal sprinkling of frankfurter facts and fiction among the book's more than 100 recipes.
Finally, the thick, spicy, perfect-for-topping a hot dog sauce, found through a Richmond reader's recipe search, mellows with age and is good enough to hold its own alone on a bun.
Serve these super sandwiches up with a plentiful supply of snack foods such as corn, tortilla or potato chips and dips; pretzels, cheese curls, nuts, pork rinds and popcorn. Combine popcorn, pretzels, peanuts and/or sesame sticks for a super mix.
Create an inviting, well-stocked self-service beverage station near the food. Tie a bouquet of team-color balloons to a football for a festive centerpiece. Make sure there's plenty of seating near and a clear path of vision to the television.
And have a super Super Bowl Sunday.
