ROOKIE POSTS FASTEST LAP

Rookie Loy Allen, driving a lap of 189.195 mph, led 22 Ford Thunderbird drivers Wednesday in a rain-shortened NASCAR Winston Cup test session at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

Greg Sacks was second-fastest at 188.877 mph, followed by Chuck Bown (188.679 mph), P.J. Jones (188.482) and Brett Bodine (187.656). Jimmy Hensley of Ridgeway was 17th at 185.567 mph.

Rusty Wallace continued to struggle, posting the 11th-fastest speed (187.071 mph). But Wallace told track reporters he was relatively happy because his Ford was one second faster than when it arrived.

Because of the afternoon rain, NASCAR officials have granted Ford drivers a three-hour session today to conclude January testing for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 20.
