BUCCANEERS OPEN AT HOME

The Salem Buccaneers have released their 1994 Carolina League schedule, which opens April 7 with a four-game home stand against the Frederick (Md.) Keys.

Among the highlights of the schedule are six Sunday afternoon games in the months of April and May. Those contests will start at 3 p.m. All other games start at 7 p.m.

There are 140 games in all, 70 of them at Salem Municipal Field.

Salem will be at Kinston and Winston-Salem, N.C., for the last seven games of the year. The three-game series with Winston-Salem begins Sept. 2.

\ CRAWFORD DIES: The last of baseball's "Gashouse Gang," Pat Crawford, died Tuesday in Kinston, N.C. He would have turned 92 on Friday.

Crawford, whose real first name was Clifford, was a part-time infielder on the St. Louis Cardinals team known as the Gashouse Gang that won the 1934 World Series. He appeared in 61 games that season. He also was a member of the 1933 Cardinals.
