GREASE FIRE DESTROYS HARDY HOME

A mobile home burned after a grease fire Tuesday night, the Hardy Road Trailer Park's second major fire in a week.

Daniel Rice told firefighters he was cooking bacon around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when the pan caught fire.

Firefighters from Hardy and Stewartsville received a call about 15 minutes later but could not save the mobile home.

Rice's mobile home was about 30 yards from the scene of last week's fire that killed three young children.

That blaze killed Tina Kane, 4; John Kane, 2; and Margaret Elizabeth Kane, not quite 1 year old. Their mother, Dorothy Kane, was listed in very serious condition in Roanoke Memorial Hospital's neuro-trauma intensive-care unit for several days with burns and smoke inhalation. She was released Wednesday.

The Kane fire probably was started by a kerosene heater, said Mark Hartberger, chief of the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Department.
