STAUNTON RIVER RALLY FALLS SHORT

Staunton River stormed back from a 12-point deficit only to see the rally fall short in a 65-58 loss to Amherst County on Wednesday night in Seminole District boys' basketball.

The Golden Eagles (5-5) cut Amherst's lead to 57-56 with 58 seconds remaining in the game, but got no closer. Geoff Zimmerman led Staunton River with a career-high 28 points.

Scott Christian led the Lancers (4-4) with 19 points. \

GALAX - Will Dodson scored eight of his 14 points in the first quarter as the Eagles overpowered the Maroon Tide in a Mountain Empire District game.

Rocky Gap held a 19-5 lead after one quarter and was helped by 28 turnovers from Galax (3-6 overall, 3-4 district).

Dale Martin added 13 points for the Eagles. Ken Houtz led the Maroon Tide with 16 points. \

LYNCHBURG - Brian Lightner scored 12 of his game-high 38 points in the first quarter, leading Holy Cross to a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Celtics.

Holy Cross (12-2, 8-0) charged to a 24-17 lead after one quarter and connected on 28 of 40 free throws.

Roanoke Catholic (6-6, 3-4) was led by Jemarh Patterson's 17 points and Mike Kolnok's 14.

Luke Lesniak added 21 points for Holy Cross, which used a 28-19 third period to put away the game. Lightner scored 15 points in that period. \
