CATHOLIC BEATEN BY HOLY CROSS

Brian Lightner scored 12 of his game-high 38 points in the first quarter to lead Holy Cross to an 85-73 victory over Roanoke Catholic in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' basketball game Wednesday night.

Holy Cross (12-2 overall, 8-0 VIC) charged to a 24-17 lead after one quarter and connected on 28 of 40 free throws. Roanoke Catholic (6-6, 3-4) was led by Jemarh Patterson's 17 points and Mike Kolnok's 14.

Luke Lesniak added 21 points for Holy Cross, which used a 28-19 third period to put away the Celtics. Lightner scored 15 points in that quarter.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Eagles were outscored 21-6 in the third period en route to a loss in the opening round of the Christian Cup.

Roanoke Valley Christian (4-8) led 36-30 at halftime, but John Martens scored 10 of his 20 points in the third quarter for Christian Academy (14-3). Kyle Kirchhofer led Christian Academy with a game-high 25 points. \

ROCKY MOUNT - The Eagles countered Cougars star Eric Webb's 31 points with some dead-eyed free-throw shooting and a combined 52 points from Carlos Holland and Chad Foutz in a key Roanoke Valley District victory.

Franklin County (7-5, 2-1), tied with Patrick Henry a half-game behind first-place Cave Spring, sank 25 of 27 free throws, including their last 17 to hold off Pulaski County.

The Cougars' record is 4-8, 0-3. \
