MAROONS AVENGE LOSS TO E&H

Revenge is sweet - just ask the Roanoke College men's basketball team.

The Maroons stuck it to Emory & Henry 69-64 on Wednesday night at the Bast Center to avenge their only loss of the season and notch their 10th victory in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

"We put a lot into this game because: one, they beat us; two, they're a perennial power; and three, we knew they'd be jacked up, too," said Page Moir, Roanoke's coach.

The Wasps (6-8 overall, 4-6 ODAC) beat the Maroons 101-96 on Dec. 1 and Roanoke appeared destined for a similar fate Wednesday.

E & H took advantage of sloppy first-half play by Roanoke (16-1, 10-1) to build a 12-point lead, 31-19, with 4 1/2 minutes to play. The Maroons missed 16 of 25 field-goal attempts, went 0-for-7 from 3-point range and were 16-of-26 from the free-throw line in the first half.

Hilliary Scott got things going for Roanoke on a dunk at the 4:18 mark. The senior forward then had two steals and five points as the Maroons outscored the Wasps 11-2 to take a 34-33 halftime lead.

"All of us were jacked up for this game," said Scott, who finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. "Emory played good pressure defense and we weren't really used to that. We haven't seen it the last couple of games.

"I just found the team down and thought that if anyone could pick them up, it would be me. We tried to get everyone involved in the offense, but that wasn't working. I had to step up my game and get the momentum swinging in our direction."

Bob Johnson, the Wasps' coach, was able to keep pressure on Roanoke by substituting constantly. Johnson went to his bench nine seconds into the game and didn't stop until 104 substitutions later.

The teams played close at the start of the second half, and Scott Butcher gave E & H the lead 44-42 with 13 minutes to play. But Scott scored two smooth layups off Wasps turnovers that put the Maroons up for good.

E & H cut the deficit to two points twice but made mistakes that allowed Roanoke opportunities from the free-throw line. The Maroons hit 12 of 20 attempts in the second half, including four by freshman Jason Bishop.

Bishop led the state in scoring last season as a senior at Group A Rye Cove High School, averaging 34.5 points per game. He had four steals and scored 10 points, including eight of the Maroons' final 12.
