IN SCHOOL

DOLORES Y. JOHNS, director of the Chapter 1 program for the Roanoke city schools, will be listed in "Who's Who in American Education" for 1994-95.

Under her leadership, the Roanoke school system received three citations from the U.S. Department of Education for excellence in programs for the educationally deprived - the only system in the state to receive the honor.

Johns has served as consultant/presenter for the Department of Education's Conference for State Chapter 1 Coordinators, the International Reading Association and the Virginia Department of Education.

\ THE FLEMING JAZZ ENSEMBLE of William Fleming High School performed for the National Magnet School/Title IV Programs Annual Conference held in Washington, D.C., in December.

The ensemble, directed by John Wright, is the first band from the Roanoke area to be asked to provide entertainment at a national magnet conference.

\ VIRGINIA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE has announced the names of four students who received grants from the Cabell Brand Center for International Poverty and Resource Studies to fund environmental research projects.

Jeffrey Batton, an engineering student, will build a model of a wind-energy system to provide pollution-free power for lighting a public park.

Angela Conroy, a sophomore, will initiate a post-consumer waste recycling system in the Roanoke City Market.

Kenny Dyer, a graduate in horticulture, will study nutrient recovery by various yard-waste recycling systems.

Mike Donahue, a sophomore majoring in science, will inventory butterflies and breeding birds in selected Roanoke public parks and produce brochures with checklists to be used for public education.

Each student will receive a $500 stipend and earn academic credit for their studies.
