CHARGES IN RADFORD FRATERNITY INCIDENTS

Seven men said to be associated with a former Radford University fraternity that has lost its national charter are free on bond following a series of fights involving members of a rival fraternity.

The incidents apparently began early Friday with a fight at the Bus Stop, a Norwood Street night spot.

Radford police say the seven - all members or friends of members of the former Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at Radford University - face a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges growing out of the fight and subsequent incidents at residences of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity members.

The local Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter lost its charter more than two years ago and no longer is recognized by the university or by its national organization. However, former chapter members have vowed to keep the fraternity alive.

Police said one man was injured in the fight. He was not identified but police said he was a roommate of one of the fraternity members.

Charged with felony malicious wounding resulting from the fight is Michael J. Valentine of Hunters Ridge. He's free on $1,000 bond.

Subsequent incidents occurred at a Tyler Avenue apartment and at a Second Avenue house where several Tau Kappa Epsilon members apparently live, police said. Property damage at the house was listed at $4,000, but police reports indicate most of the damage was to fraternity pictures and frames and to trophies.

``Very little damage was done to the house,'' said Police Chief A.C. Earles.

Adrian F. Ordenes of Fairfax Street was charged with five felony counts of breaking and entering at the Tyler Avenue apartment with intent to commit assault and battery. He is free on $10,000 bond.

Arrested in the same incident were Wajid Aziz of Fairfax Street, Pat W. Kannan of Downey Street, Sean B. Muldoon of Muse Hall on the Radford University Campus and John B. Adams of McLean, Va. Each was charged with one count of felony breaking and entering with intent to commit assault and battery.

Police said the break-in and property damage at the Second Avenue house involved the same men as well as Michael C. Mateer of Lawrence Street. Each faces felony charges of breaking and entering with intent to destroy property.

Bond was set at $7,500 for Aziz; $3,000 for Adams, Kannan and Mateer; and $2,000 for Muldoon.

All but Aziz are listed as students in the 1993-94 Radford University directory.

Earles said Wednesday he didn't know if there would be additional arrests in the wake of Friday's incidents.

Last fall, a resident who lives near the Fairfax Street house where some of those arrested live told a committee of university and city officials about apparent initiation rituals and large, boisterous gatherings in the neighborhood.
