Jimmy Spencer was second fastest with a lap of 189.673 mph as the Ford Thunderbirds closed out January testing with a three-hour session. Chuck Bown was third fastest at 189.394 mph, followed by P.J. Jones at 188.048 mph and Rusty Wallace at 187.696 mph.
Ritchie Petty was sixth fastest of the 11 drivers participating with a lap of 187.071 mph, and Jimmy Hensley was 10th at 184.729 mph.
Ernie Irvan led all drivers in the January tests with a lap of 191.042 mph on Jan. 11 in his Ford. Sterling Marlin was second-fastest in a Chevrolet Lumina at 190.759 mph on Jan. 5th. Also in the top 10 were Harry Gant, Chevy, 190.638 mph on Jan. 5; Dale Earnhardt, Chevy, 190.638 mph on the 19th; Greg Sacks, Ford, 190.275 mph on the 12th; Robert Pressley, Chevy, 190.235 mph on the 18th; Orr with his Thursday lap; Ted Musgrave, Ford, 189.753 mph on the 25th; Bill Elliott, Ford, 189.673 on the 24th; and Spencer's identical speed Thursday.
The track reopens to Winston Cup cars on Feb. 10 with testing for the Feb. 13 Busch Clash. Daytona 500 practice begins Feb. 11. Pole qualifying for the 500 is Feb. 12. The race is Feb. 20. - Staff report
