Crowe's fictional trilogy focused on Japanese culture, a subject he was fascinated by and studied extensively.
"It was kind of like the `Shogun' series. Some readers told John Crowe it was better than `Shogun,' " said Crowe's wife, Liz.
Crowe continued to write until he became ill, completing a novel, "Gods of Stone," and a screenplay.
Crowe, a copy editor for the Roanoke Times & World-News, worked as a volunteer several hours each week at the City Rescue Mission and taught Sunday school at St. John's Episcopal Church.
"He would go to the Mission every Thursday and they'd always ask him to cook because he was such a great cook," Liz Crowe said. "If anything else came up for Thursday, forget it."
