NOTE TO READERS

If you've tried to call the Roanoke Times & World-News' InfoLine service over the last several days, you've probably gotten a busy signal. We'd like to apologize for that.

We'd also like to offer a brief explanation. InfoLine has 21 lines available for callers in the Roanoke Valley and 10 for callers in the New River Valley. Usually that's enough to handle the amount of callers. But the wintry weather over the last several days - and the school closings and schedule changes that go with it - has prompted a deluge of callers to our school closing information and local weather lines. The more people that call, the more often YOU get a busy signal.

So what are we going to do about it?

Whenever there is weather that may close schools, we'll reduce the number of information categories callers can access from five to two. You won't be able to get information on as many different topics, but you'll be more likely to get through for the information you really need. When the crush of calls subsides, we'll increase the number of information categories back to five.
