TECH WOMEN STRETCH STREAK

Jenny Root scored 26 points Friday night to lead Virginia Tech to its 21st consecutive victory at Cassell Coliseum, a 72-54 decision over Louisville in Metro Conference women's basketball.

The Hokies (13-4 overall, 2-2 Metro) have the sixth-longest current winning streak in Division I.

Root also had 12 rebounds in her third double-double of the season. She is 10th on the all-time Tech scoring list with 910 points.

Jody Martin led Louisville (6-10, 3-2) with 21 points.

Tech led 38-35 at halftime and 48-43 with 12:12 remaining in the game. Hokies guard Lisa Leftwich then hit a 3-pointer and made a layup and two free throws after being fouled intentionally. Leftwich added a jumper to cap her 7-0 run and give the Hokies a 55-43 lead.

Sue Logsdon added 14 for Tech, and Christi Osborne scored 10.

In other women's games:

\ Maryland-Baltimore County 64, Radford 47: In Catonsville, Md., senior guard Missy Quille scored a career-high 27 points, including 21 in the second half, to lead the Retrievers past the Highlanders in the Big South Conference.

UMBC (5-9, 4-3) led 26-18 at halftime and pulled away with a 19-4 run to start the second half. Radford shot 30 percent in the second half and 28 percent for the game.

Nicole Gardiner paced the Highlanders (7-8, 5-3) with 13 points and six rebounds. Mindy Ballinger added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

\ Eastern Mennonite 68, Hollins 63, OT: Rosanna Zook hit a 3-point shot with 8 seconds left in regulation and the Royals pulled away to win their Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in the extra period.

Hollins (3-11, 2-10) led throughout the second half before Zook sent the game into overtime. Mandy Judd led the Royals (6-10, 4-7) with 16 points.

Sarah Kirby was the high scorer for Hollins with 16 points. Nicole Methena added 12.

\ Men

\ Randolph-Macon 74, Guilford 64: In Ashland, senior guard Dan Prescott scored a career-high 30 points as the Yellow Jackets (8-9, 6-5) rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the Quakers (6-10, 5-7) in an ODAC game.

Randolph-Macon went on an 11-0 run with 16:39 left in the game to tie the score at 39. Guilford regained the lead several times, but the Yellow Jackets went up 51-48 on a three-point play by Nathan Davis with 7:29 left and never trailed again.

Clifton Howard led the Quakers with 15 points. Paul Ferrell added 12.
