The Franklin County Sheriff's Department was investigating. The names of the victims were withheld because relatives had not been notified.
Overton said an apparently estranged boyfriend shot the 68-year-old father multiple times in the victim's home in the Red Valley community on Virginia 687, where his girlfriend was staying with her two children.
The man then abducted the woman and drove about five miles down Virginia 692 in her car toward Boones Mill, Overton said. He stopped the vehicle in the middle of the gravel road, shot the woman once and then turned the gun on himself, according to Overton.
The first shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. Friday.
The girlfriend's children were unharmed, the sheriff said.
Overton said the bodies would be taken to Community Hospital in Roanoke for autopsies.
Overton said sheriff's investigators believe the man used an assault rifle.
