ALFALFA CLUB GETTING ITS FIRST WOMEN

Hillary Rodham Clinton was ready to help break the gender barrier at the Alfalfa Club as the 81-year-old club opened the door Saturday to its first women members and guests.

President Clinton and the first lady were on the guest list for dinner as the organization prepared to induct its first three female members: Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole, and former Washington Post Co. Chairman Katharine Graham.

The club's outgoing president, Sen. Charles Robb, D-Va., pushed to bring women into the organization. He said there was never any prohibition on women - they just never got invited. - Associated Press
