NOTE

CAROLINA TRUE BLUE TO SMITH: North Carolina has reaffirmed its commitment to Dean Smith.

The UNC board of trustees amended Smith's contract Friday to allow him to coach the Tar Heels into the 21st century. The contract revision calls for Smith to remain head coach through June 30, 2001. Smith, who took over the program for the 1961-1962 season, will be 70 in 2001.

"That doesn't mean I will coach until then," said Smith, who has the option to terminate the contract at any time with 120 days' notice. The contract does not change Smith's annual salary of $137,000.

Smith's record at North Carolina is 790-226. His winning percentage of .777 ranks fifth all-time and is the best among active coaches with at least 10 years' experience.
