EX-ROBB AIDE NAMED TO LEAD DEMOCRATS

A former aide to Sen. Charles Robb, D-Va., who pleaded guilty for his role in leaking taped telephone conversations involving former Gov. Douglas Wilder has been named to a top post with the Democratic National Committee.

Robert L. Watson was named the committee's executive director by DNC Chairman David Wilhelm as part of a staff restructuring in preparation for this fall's elections. Another former Robb aide, Tyrone Hicks, was named director of administration and operations.

Watson is one of three former Robb aides who pleaded guilty to infractions arising from a federal investigation of the 1991 tape recordings. In the taped conversation, Wilder dismissed Robb's political future.

Watson is on leave from the National Education Association, where he was a senior political strategist. He is a former political director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which Robb headed for two years.

Hicks is former deputy state director for Robb. He worked for Democrat Mary Sue Terry's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign last year. - Associated Press
