MASTERCARD NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

Mastercard International has named H. Eugene Lockhart its new president just a week after the surprise resignation of Alex W. Hart as president of the credit-card company.

Lockhart, 43, was an executive with Midland Bank of London until 1992, in his last job there as chief executive in charge of retail banking in Britain.

Hart, 53, resigned last week to become executive vice chairman of Advanta Corp., a specialized company that mainly issues gold credit cards.

He has been widely credited with turning around Mastercard, which had fallen far behind its rival, Visa International, in market share.
