The major airlines were involved in 23 accidents last year, but the only death involved a member of a ground crew who was struck by a propeller. The National Transportation Safety Board said the fatal-accident rate among the major airlines was the lowest since 1980, when no deaths were reported.
Preliminary figures also show that charter airlines reported no deaths for the fourth straight year, and the number of deaths on air taxis was 42, down from 70 the previous year.
The only increase in deaths was on commuter airlines, where 24 people were killed in 1993, compared to 21 in 1992.
