Former President George Bush and former Secretary of State James Baker received the Order of Merit, Germany's highest award, from Chancellor Helmut Kohl on Sunday.
Kohl emphasized their contributions to the reunification of Germany and the destruction of the Berlin Wall. Kohl said he also wanted to thank the United States for its help to Germany following World War II, recalling the aid given during his boyhood in 1946 and 1947, "when we were half-starved."
"All the world expects the Americans to help them; but then after they have helped them, most of them forget to say thank you," the chancellor said.
Demi Moore, shameless Vanity Fair cover girl, will star as the classic shameless hussy Hester Prynne in a new movie version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter," says Entertainment Weekly.
The story, which takes place in 1650, concerns Prynne, who is forced to wear an embroidered scarlet "A" on her bosom after the birth of an illegitimate child; her strict and unforgiving husband, Roger Chillingworth; and the Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, the tormented minister who is the child's father.
A source told the magazine that "the film will be as faithful to Hawthorne as Hester was to Chillingworth."
