STAUNTON RIVER FALLS SHORT AT HORN

A long jumper by Staunton River's Geoff Zimmerman rimmed out at the final horn, allowing Appomattox to escape with a 56-55 Seminole District boys' basketball victory Monday night.

Wendell Hodge's 8-foot jumper with 12 seconds left supplied the winning points for Appomattox (9-2 overall, 9-2 district).

Zimmerman's 19 points paced the Golden Eagles (6-6, 6-6), who blew a 37-30 halftime lead. Linwood English contributed 15 points and Cornelius Foxx 12 for Staunton River. \

Galax 42

GALAX - Anthony Myers scored 17 points to lead the Spartans to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide.

Patrick Steele added 11, and John King scored 10 for Giles.

Ken Houtz led Galax (3-9, 3-7) with 11 points, and Matt Snow chipped in 10.

Giles held a 26-21 halftime lead, but a 22-10 third quarter gave the Spartans control. \

Covington 64

James River 60

COVINGTON - Van Rogers scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Cougars to a come-from-behind Pioneer District victory over the Knights.

James River led by five points at halftime and held a 50-49 advantage with 5:15 left in the game. But a 3-pointer by Rogers put the Cougars (7-7, 5-1) on top 52-50, and they led the rest of the way.

Keeno Jones added 15 points for Covington.

James River lost despite outshooting Covington 54 percent to 38 percent from the field and outrebounding the Cougars 38-24. However, the Knights committed 26 turnovers to Covington's 10.

Brian Shorter led James River with 23 points, and Jason Peery added 16.

UNION, W.VA. - Mark Jenkins scored 10 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter, enabling Union to break open a tie game through three periods.

K.P. Humphries had 23 points for Union (3-6).

Donnie Costigan paced Covington Boys' Home (8-4) with 26 points, and Sean Riddick added 11. \
