The department offers a variety of materials to help teachers teach their pupils about environmental issues. The environmental program provides information on "Plants for Wildlife," "A Planting Guide for Virginia's Nectar Seekers," "Successful Wildlife Plantings" and "Backyard Wildlife Habitat."
Teachers also can receive a 10 percent discount on any plants they use in their classrooms, as well as receive certification once an environmental project is completed.

\ Tenth- and 11th-graders at Blacksburg High School who are interested in preparing for SCHOLASTIC ASSESSMENT TEST or other advanced placement courses should not miss a meeting at the school Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
There will be an overview of advanced placement classes offered at the school, and a presentation by a representative from the Kaplan Test Preparation Center in Blacksburg.

\ Montgomery County Elementary School guidance counselors have formed a group called ``STEPPING STONES TO A GREAT EDUCATION,'' for parents of children ages 3-6 years old. Meetings are held every month to help parents and their preschool children make a smooth transition from preschool to public schools. This month's meeting will be held Feb. 8 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Christiansburg Primary School.
The topic will be ``Services Provided by Montgomery County Schools," with representatives from speech, special education and the Parent Resource Center.

\ In celebration of the SCHOOL-BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP with Gilbert Linkous Elementary School and Litton Poly-Scientific, Friday will be "Litton Poly- Scientific Day" at the school. The pupils will show their support for their business partner by wearing blue and white, the official Poly-Sci colors. T-shirts and other treats will be donated for a schoolwide raffle.
\ Theater students at PULASKI COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL will perform Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis" for the Virginia High School League One-Act play competition.
"Metamorphosis" is about the grotesque transformation of Gregor Samsa into a human-sized cockroach. The lead will be played by senior Aaron Parks. Other roles are played by Mark Dye, April Corvin, Jason Horn, Lindsey Hudson and Nicole Burgess.
A public performance of the "Metamorphosis" will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the school.

\ The ARMED SERVICES VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY test, a national test given to high schoolers nationwide, will be given to all Christiansburg High School 10th-graders Friday. The test provides information regarding a student's potential for performing in civilian and military occupations, as well as the student's aptitude for further education.
