CHILHOWIE DROPS GEORGE WYTHE 62-57 IN OVERTIME

Jeff Robinson made five of six free throws in overtime to lift Chilhowie to a 62-57 victory over George Wythe on Tuesday in Hogoheegee District boys' basketball.

Chilhowie (9-6, 7-3) outscored George Wythe (7-7, 6-3) 7-2 in overtime and overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to notch the win.

Shane Olinger led the Warriors with 18 points, and Andy Blevins added 17. D.J. Preston had 15, and Robinson chipped in 10.

Aaron Andrews led George Wythe with 21 points, and Jeff Bourne scored 16.

\ Northwood 77

Rural Retreat 46

RURAL RETREAT - John Griffin poured in 30 points to lead the Panthers over the Indians in the Hogoheegee District.

Will Woodward and Daniel Kestner added 11 apiece for Northwood (5-8, 3-5).

David Simmons led Rural Retreat (6-5, 5-4) with 9 points. \

Fort Chiswell 77

Galax 48

FORT CHISWELL - The Pioneers took a 20-point halftime lead and coasted to a Mountain Empire District win over the Maroon Tide.

Dyer Jackson scored a game-high 23 points for Fort Chiswell (6-7, 5-6). T.J. King and Jody Burnette added 12 points apiece. Brad Hughes scored seven points for the Pioneers in addition to his seven steals and 10 assists.

Matt Snow led Galax (3-10, 3-8) with 17 points.

Fort Chiswell grabbed a 40-20 halftime lead and cruised to the win. \

Monday's games

\ Alleghany 73, Lord Botetourt 65: At Daleville, James Hughes scored 17 points to pace four Alleghany players in double figures as the Mountaineers broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and beat the Cavaliers in a Blue Ridge District boys' game.

Alleghany outscored Lord Botetourt 27-19 in the final eight minutes to break away from a 46-46 tie through three quarters. Alleghany did most of its damage inside, taking advantage of three Lord Botetourt players saddled with four personal fouls.

Todd Wheatley added 16 points, Jermaine Winston 15 and Todd Crawford 14 for Alleghany.

Shannon Williams paced Lord Botetourt (7-4, 1-3) with 26 points. Gabe Sander added 12 and Ryan Salvi 10. \

Covington 64, James River 60: At Covington, Van Rogers scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Cougars to a come-from-behind Pioneer District victory over the Knights.

James River led by five points at halftime and led 50-49 with 5:15 left. But a 3-pointer by Rogers put the Cougars (7-7, 5-1) on top 52-50, and they led the rest of the way.

James River outshot Covington 54 percent to 38 percent field and outrebounding the Cougars 38-24. However, the Knights committed 26 turnovers to Covington's 10.

Brian Shorter led James River with 23 points, and Jason Peery added 16.

\ Union (W.Va.) 79, Covington Boys' Home 69: At Union, W.Va., Mark Jenkins scored 10 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter, enabling Union to break open a tie game through three periods. K.P. Humphries had 23 points for Union (3-6). Donnie Costigan paced Covington Boys' Home (8-4) with 26 points, and Sean Riddick added 11. \
