SCHOOL BOARD HIRES INSTRUCTION LEADER

The Roanoke School Board has hired a replacement for Norm Michaels, who retired from the school system during an administrative reorganization in the fall.

School Superintendent E. Wayne Harris announced Tuesday that Rita Bishop had been selected to fill the job of assistant superintendent for instruction and learning organizations. Bishop, 49, is completing her doctorate in educational policy planning and administration at the University of Southern California.

Bishop began work Monday. She last worked as an assistant superintendent in the Campbell Union High School district, which covers parts of San Jose and four other California communities.

She fills a post left empty since September, when Harris took Michaels off the job but failed to fire or reassign him. Michaels later retired.
