EUROPE, IF ZHIRINOVSKY HAD HIS WAY
This European map, as boldly redrawn by Russian ultranationalist Vladimir
Zhirinovsky, would sweep away Austria, the Czech Republic and all three Baltic
nations and sharply shrink Poland and Romania to achieve his dream of a new
Russian empire. Zhirinovsky recently gave autographed copies to at least two
former diplomats, from France and Sweden, according to French and Dutch news
reports. The map was printed in several European newspapers this week.
Zhirinovsky's views are considered outlandish, but foreigv observers are wary
of the power he is amassing among Russia's disillusioned voters. Tuesday,
Zhirinovsky told backers that he would unseat Russia's government and help
Serbs resist the West. Story on A8.
