HELP-WANTED INDEX RISES

A monthly measure of labor demand rose modestly in December but is sharply higher than a year ago, a business research group says.

The Conference Board of New York said Tuesday its Help-Wanted Advertising Index rose to 110 points in December from 107 in November and 95 in December 1992. In the region that includes Virginia, the index was 113 points in December, 108 in November and 104 a year earlier.

The index is based on the volume of classified jobs advertised in 51 major U.S. newspapers.
