\ The VMI faithful at Cameron Hall on Wednesday night breathed a collective sigh of relief about four minutes into the second half of the Keydets' basketball game against Shenandoah.
The 16-minute, 12-second mark was when Lawrence Gullette capped a run that turned a five-point VMI lead into a 13-point advantage, and the Keydets cruised to a 104-77 victory over the Division III Hornets in a non-conference game.
The Keydets hit 51 percent of their field-goal attempts - 13 percent more than their average - and reached the 100-points mark for the first time since the teams' last meeting, a 100-71 Keydets victory in 1991.
Six players scored in double figures for VMI (3-14), led by Maurice Spencer, a freshman from Martinsville, with 18. Reserve Bryan Woolsey scored 15, and freshman B.J. Grinage added a season-high 13 points and seven rebounds.
"With B.J. it's ironic, he's in the gym each day right after school for about 15 to 20 minutes for individual work and it's starting to pay off," said Joe Cantafio, the Keydets' coach. "He's going to be a good one for us."
Senior Jonathan Goodman scored 12 points, all in the first half, including VMI's final two baskets that made it 44-39 heading into halftime.
Goodman, a 6-foot-7 senior, entered the game averaging 9.4 rebounds per game, third best among Division I players in the state. He had 10 against Shenandoah (6-12).
