GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL EXPANDING NETWORK

An experimental computer link between the Southwest Virginia Governor's School and Pulaski County High School could lead to improved technological teaching tools at other schools in the region.

The Governor's School is on the Pulaski County High School campus, so it was a relatively simple operation to link its computer network to the high school.

But Margaret Duncan, the Governor's School director, has plans to extend the link farther into Southwest Virginia. The main cost would be telephone lines, she said, since the Governor's School already has the computer equipment.

School systems that have sent students to the Governor's School for a half-day of advanced classes include Wythe, Carroll, Grayson, Bland, Smyth, Floyd, Giles and Pulaski counties and Galax. But computer linkups could extend that reach even farther.

The Governor's School would also offer in-service workshops for teachers in using the links, Duncan said.

"This is the first phase," she said. "I think it's exciting."
