The pocket, which is more than a dozen feet deep, was found while removing several gasoline storage tanks. How widely it has spread remains uncertain.
There have been complaints in parts of town for months about the odor of gasoline. Officials are still not saying whether they believe this pocket is the cause of those complaints, but have said the smells do not seem to indicate a fire hazard or pose any health threats.
The most recent odor complaint was in the kitchen of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church on Church Street. Odors are also being monitored at a well in front of the Wythe County Rescue Squad building between Church and Fourth streets, and from the All-American Car Wash to the St. John Episcopal Church on East Main Street. - Southwest Bureau
