LEAKING AMMONIA RENDERED HARMLESS

A minor ammonia leak caused by a machine malfunction at Roanoke Cold Storage on Wasena Avenue was brought under control by employees Thursday night, according to Captain Gary Moorefield of Fire Station 7.

Firefighters and a hazardous materials team were called to the scene when residents in the area smelled ammonia just before 8:30 p.m., Moorefield said.

No injuries were reported, and no evacuation was necessary.

Moorefield said employees stopped the leak before firefighters arrived at the plant.
