FOSTER NOTCHES HISTORIC VICTORY

Retirement? Not for Greg Foster.

The 35-year-old Foster, who announced that 1993 would be his final year as a hurdler but decided to come back this year after a disappointing season, signaled his return to competition with an historic victory Friday night.

Skimming over the hurdles with the zest of a younger man, the bald Foster raced to victory in the 60-meter hurdles at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden.

It was his 10th Millrose triumph, the most by any track athlete in the meet's 87-year history. Foster had shared the record with Hall of Famer hurdler Harrison Dillard, his idol. The meet record-holder is pole vaulter Bob Richards, with 11.

Foster didn't appear as if he were ready for retirement Friday night. Facing a field that included 1992 Olympic silver medalist Tony Dees and 1992 bronze medalist Jack Pierce, the long-legged Foster bolted from the blocks smartly, took the lead at the second hurdle and held it the rest of the way.

The winning time of 7.61 seconds was .04 seconds faster than Foster had run last year in winning his ninth Millrose title.
