MAGNA VISTA RALLIES FOR WIN

Terry Holmes scored a game-high 26 points as Magna Vista came from behind to beat Bassett 72-66 in a Piedmont District boys' basketball game Friday night.

The Warriors (11-3 overall and in the district) trailed by six points with six minutes remaining in the game, but Magna Vista used its man-to-man defense to create Bengals turnovers.

Solid free-throw shooting also helped the Warriors in the fourth period as they nailed seven of 11 shots from the line and took the lead for good with four minutes to go in the game.

Art Wade led Bassett (5-9, 5-7) with 21 points. \

Laurel Park 69

MARTINSVILLE - The Cavaliers, who had one Piedmont District victory before Friday, blew an 18-point lead but came back to win in overtime and knock the Lancers out of a share of the district lead.

Laurel Park (11-5, 10-3) rallied to take a 63-60 lead, but Scott Whitt's lone 3-pointer tied the score for Chatham and neither team scored on its final possession of regulation. Corey Wilson missed a 3-pointer and the Lancers couldn't get the follow to fall at the end of overtime.

Steve Jefferson had three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 13 points for the Cavaliers (4-12, 2-11), who got 11 points each from Jermaine Fitzgerald and Adam Lovelace.

Girard Foster had 16 points to lead five scorers in double figures for Laurel Park, which fell into a second-place tie with Magna Vista, one game behind Martinsville. \

Patrick County 39

MARTINSVILLE - Michael Martin scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs whipped the Cougars in the Piedmont District.

Patrick County (2-13, 2-12) led 17-15 after one quarter, but Martinsville (12-3, 11-2) used a 21-9 second period to take the lead for good.

Carlos Martin added 12 points for the Bulldogs, and Justin McHone led Patrick County with 11 points. \

Rockbridge County 60

The Vikings tuned up for today's Blue Ridge District showdown with Salem by pounding the outmanned Wildcats.

Nathan Hungate had 30 points for Northside (14-1, 5-0), which will visit Salem at 5 p.m. today in a battle for the Blue Ridge lead. Northside is ranked fourth in the latest state Group AA poll, with Salem third.

Marty Early had 21 points for Rockbridge County (6-7, 0-5). \

FLOYD - Jamie Warren scored a game-high 27 points and Jason Light had 26, hitting all 11 of his field-goal attempts, as the Buffaloes rolled to the Mountain Empire District victory over the Rockets.

Light, limited to three quarters because of foul trouble, scored 14 points in the second quarter as Floyd County (12-1, 11-1) took command. The Buffaloes are No. 5 in the state sportswriters' Group A poll.

Kevin King had 11 points to lead Bland (8-8, 7-6). \

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues used full-court pressure to take a 22-6 through one quarter and rolled to the Pioneer District victory over the Rockets.

Mike McElroy scored 20 points in the first half for Parry McCluer (12-1, 5-0), the No. 3 team in this week's state Group A sportswriters' poll. He finished with 25. Nathan Baker added 14.

James Fisher led Craig County (2-6, 1-4) with 21 points. \

PEARISBURG - Sophomore Aaron Myers hit a career-high five 3-pointers for the Spartans, who raced to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and never were threatened.

The Shawnees, whose record dropped to 0-14 overall and 0-12 in the Mountain Empire District, got 12 points from Jeremy Nichols, who was 10-for-10 at the free-throw line.

Bobby Oglesby had 13 points for Giles (6-7, 6-5). \

GALAX - The Green Wave outscored the Maroon Tide 24-5 in the third quarter to pull away for the Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide.

Bryan Prett led the Green Wave (4-8, 4-6) with 17 points.

Sophomore Jeff Ross had 15 points and six rebounds for Galax (3-11, 3-9).

ROCKY GAP - Dale Martin's 20 points led a balanced attack as the Eagles downed the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

Rocky Gap (4-11, 4-9) broke to a 10-point lead after one quarter and never looked back. Jody Burnett had a game-high 29 points for Fort Chiswell (7-8, 6-7). \

COLLINSVILLE - Nat Law and Ben Seay combined for 32 points to give the Cavaliers a Piedmont District victory over the Trojans.

Law stole a Tunstall pass with 30 seconds remaining and was fouled as he drove to the basket. He hit one of two free throws to give Fieldale-Collinsville (9-8, 9-5) a three-point lead.

Hubert Adkins and Khris Law led Tunstall (9-8, 8-6) with 12 points apiece.

BUCHANAN - After watching their lead dwindle to four points after three quarters, the Knights pulled away in the final period behind Keith Bryant and Brian Shorter for a Pioneer District Victory over the Rams.

Bryant, a 6-foot-3 senior, had a game-high 26 points as James River improved its record to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the district. Highland's record dropped to 1-6 and 0-5 despite 21 points from John Hull. \

COVINGTON - Donnie Costigan scored a team-high 24 points, virtually matching his average, as the Indians overcame the absence of two starters to improve their record to 10-4.

Scottie Forbes had 18 points for Covington Boys' Home, which today must travel to Mercer Christian in Princeton, W.Va., without injured regulars Patrick Hall and Sean Riddick. \

RURAL RETREAT - The Indians overcame a 14-0 deficit to down the Rebels in a Hogoheegee District game dominated by free-throw shooting.

Rural Retreat (7-6, 6-5) was 18-of-22 from the line and PH-Glade Spring (4-9, 3-6) was 21-of-33.

Rusty Crigger had 17 points to pace Rural Retreat. \
