NORTHSIDE ROLLS PAST ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY 78-60

Northside tuned up for today's Blue Ridge District boys' basketball showdown with Salem by pounding outmanned Rockbridge County 78-60 on Friday night at the Vikings' gym.

Nathan Hungate had 30 points for Northside (14-1 overall, 5-0 in the district), which will visit Salem at 5 p.m. today in a battle for the Blue Ridge lead. The Spartans, also 5-0 in the league, beat Northside 68-66 in overtime in a Christmas tournament game that didn't count in the district standings. The Vikings are ranked fourth in the latest state Group AA poll, with Salem third.

Northside didn't overlook the Wildcats on Friday night, using their pressure defense to force turnovers and bolt to a 17-point halftime advantage.

Maurice Garrison had 12 points for Northside, while Chad Brammer added 11 and Darius Henderson 10. Vikings big man Dana Gibson failed to score, but he came up with eight rebounds and four blocks.

Marty Early had 21 points and Martin Mayercheck 16 to lead Rockbridge County (6-7, 0-5).

Roanoke Valley Christian 82 Roanoke Catholic 71

The Eagles, trailing 19-10 after the first quarter, broke open the Virginia Independent Conference game with a 33-point second period and handed the Celtics their seventh consecutive defeat.

Josh MacDermod hit three of his four 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the half and finished with 20 points to share Roanoke Valley Christian scoring honors with Billy Fluker. Richard Booth added 14 as the Eagles (7-10, 5-4) had five double-figure scorers.

Roanoke Catholic (6-10, 3-6) had four scorers in double figures, led by Deon Royer with 17.

NARUNA - Linwood English scored 22 points, including six 3-point goals, as the Golden Eagles (7-5, 7-5) downed the Generals (3-11, 3-11) in the Seminole District.

Glenvar 64 Bath County 59

The Highlanders (7-4, 4-1) hit 12 of 16 from the free-throw line in the fourth period to put away the Chargers (6-7, 2-4) in a Pioneer District matchup.

Bath County was without leading scorer Patrick Lennon, who is out indefinitely with a sprained ankle.

Glenvar senior forward Brad Melton scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter. He also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Parry McCluer 81 Craig County 47

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues (12-1, 5-0) used full-court pressure to take a 22-6 through one quarter and rolled to the Pioneer District victory over the Rockets (2-6, 1-4). Mike McElroy scored 20 points in the first half for Parry McCluer. He finished with 25.

James River 7400 Highland County 56

BUCHANAN - After watching their lead dwindle to four points after three quarters, the Knights pulled away in the final period behind Keith Bryant and Brian Shorter for a Pioneer District Victory over the Rams.

Bryant, a 6-foot-3 senior, had a game-high 26 points as James River improved its record to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the district. Highland's record dropped to 1-6 and 0-5 despite 21 points from John Hull.
