Senior Heather Berglund, the Metro Conference's dig career dig leader, was honored as Virginia Tech's most valuable player at the volleyball team's annual banquet.
Berglund, from Englewood, Colo., was a three-time All-Metro selection. She has 1,710 career digs. She led the Metro in digs per game in 1993 with a 3.7 average and finished fifth on the conference's all-time kill list with 1,612.
In her four years, she helped Tech to an 87-59 record, a share of the 1992 Metro Conference regular-season title and a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championships.
Virginia Tech runner Geoff Tonini and Tulane women's basketball player Christy Thomaskutty have been selected Metro Conference athletes of the month for January.
The Hokies won all three of their dual meets and finished first in the 17-team Virginia Tech Invitational. Tonini had a 3.95 grade point average last semester.
Thomaskutty set a Tulane record with six 3-point goals in games against Southwestern Louisiana and Arkansas. She has a 3.64 grade point average in chemistry.
Virginia Tech cross country and track standout Mike Cox was selected the 1993 West Virginia Track Athlete of the Year.
Cox, a nine-time West Virginia state champion in cross country and track made an immediate impact at Tech by winning his first three collegiate cross country meets.
Cox, from Princeton, W.Va., will compete in the World Junior Cross Country Trials today in Memphis, Tenn. The top six finishers advance to the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in March.
Liberty University head football coach Sam Rutigliano has announced the hiring of former NFL All-Pro offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure as offensive line coach of the Flames.
DeLamielleure played for the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns and was selected for the Pro Bowl six straight seasons (1975-80).
In Blacksburg, four Virginia Tech men's tennis players reached the semifinals Friday in the Virginia Tech Indoor Invitational.
Chris Imensek, a junior, will play Oliver Mayo, a freshman, in the first semifinal. Imensek defeated No. 2 seed Tom Clarke of Richmond, while the third-seeded Mayo beat Urzua of Landers. In the other semifinal, Tech sophomore Adam Gottfried will play Tech freshman Chad Toleafoa. Semifinals are at 1 p.m. today. Singles finals are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
