Ellsworth, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound sophomore guard from Drewryville, is the fourth athlete in recent years to play both football and basketball for Virginia. The others were Matt Blundin, Mark Cooke and Terry Kirby.
Ellsworth was a three-year starter at guard for Southampton High School, averaging 28 points, nine rebounds and seven assists a game as a senior. He was the second player in Southampton basketball history to score more than 1,000 career points.

No. 10 Virginia 59, Florida St. 50: At Tallahassee, Fla., Wendy Palmer had 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Cavaliers beat the Seminoles in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's game.
Florida State (1-16 overall, 1-10 ACC) led by nine points for much of the second half before Virginia (15-2, 9-0) went on a 14-2 run to take a 39-36 lead.
Florida State twice got within three points in the final minutes. But Charleata Beale, who scored all of her 13 points in the final six minutes, helped Virginia withstand the FSU rally.
\ Radford 88, Charleston Southern 78: In Charleston, S.C., Shannan Wilkey scored 31 points as the Highlanders cruised past the Buccaneers in a Big South Conference women's game.
Wilkey connected on 13 of 19 shots from the floor and was five of six from the free-throw line. The game was tied 51-51 early in the second half until Radford (8-9, 6-4 Big South) went on an 18-3 run to give the Highlanders a 69-54 lead with seven minutes remaining.
\ Randolph-Macon 91, Hollins 49: Katy Parrish scored 21 points and Jenny Kohler added 19 as Randolph-Macon routed Hollins in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
The Yellow Jackets led 43-25 at halftime and never trailed.
Kohler sank three 3-point shots and Sandy Crispin scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Randolph-Macon (12-5, 9-3 ODAC).
Sarah Kirby scored 15 points and nabbed 10 rebounds for Hollins (3-13, 2-11). Stacy Davis chipped in 10 points.
