FRANKLIN CO. FALLS TO ATLEE IN STATE DUALS

Atlee backup 189-pounder Philip Johnakin pinned Franklin County reserve heavyweight Chad Dudley with one second remaining Friday as the Raiders topped the Eagles 38-27 in the Group AAA State Duals Wrestling Championships.

Leading 27-23, Franklin County forfeited the 171-pound class to Atlee's undefeated Jason Britt and bumped Landon Cuff (22-7) up to 189. But the strategy backfired as Atlee's Coleman Bishop topped Cuff, 7-1.

Franklin County (10-5) then trailed 32-27, meaning Dudley, in his first varsity match of the season, needed at least a technical fall to keep his team alive. Dudley wrestled well, and trapped the much-lighter Johnakin on his back three times. But Johnakin fought back, taking the offensive late in the match and finally rolling Dudley for the clinching pin at the 5 minute, 59 second mark.

Erik Ingram, Franklin County's top heavyweight, missed the trip for personal reasons.

Atlee (12-4) will meet three-time defending champion Great Bridge in today's semifinals.
