The Roanoke Times & World-News won 11 writing and photography awards Saturday in the Virginia Press Association's annual newspaper contest.

First place for editorial writing went to Alan Sorensen.

The newspaper also took first place for the layout of its business section. Peggy Bier and Steve Stinson designed the winning pages.

Second-place awards went to Bill Cochran for his outdoors column, Lon Wagner for a feature article on the Rev. Elwood Gallimore, and Greg Edwards and Douglas Pardue in general news for their reporting on the fatal Southmountain coal mine explosion in Wise County.

Mark Morrison and Motoya Nakamura took second place in the combination picture and story category for their coverage of Haitian refugees in the Roanoke Valley.

Two staff photographers claimed second-place awards. Gene Dalton won for his photograph of a rock climber at Mount Rogers, and Keith Graham won for his series on fly fishing.

Third-place awards went to Morrison in the lifestyles category for a story on cowboys in Western Virginia; to Jeff DeBell and Joe Kennedy in business and financial writing for their report on job losses in the Roanoke Valley; and to Laurence Hammack, Ed Shamy and Ron Brown in the in-depth reporting category for their look at how Virginia deals with drivers with suspended licenses.
