Marshall (7-13 overall, 5-7 in the conference), the only conference team to lose to VMI this season, snapped a three-game losing streak in its first game since coach Dwight Freeman announced he would resign effective at the end of the season.
The Thundering Herd redeemed itself for the embarrassing 82-78 loss to the Keydets (3-15, 1-10) on Jan. 27 in Lexington.
VMI led 25-24 late in the first half before Marshall started its run.
Troy Gray began the spurt with 2 minutes, 31 seconds left before the break by hitting two free throws. Shawn Moore made two more free throws at 1:21, and Brown added a 3-pointer from the left wing with 22 seconds left and another from the same spot at the buzzer to forge a 34-25 halftime lead.
Malik Hightower, who didn't play in the Herd's first game against the Keydets because of a knee injury, capped the run at the start of the second half by hitting one of two free throws following a technical foul on VMI.
Marshall, which had 29 turnovers in its loss to the Keydets, cut that to 18 on Saturday. VMI also hurt itself by hitting just seven of 18 free throws.
Moore added 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Herd, and Hightower scored 14. Bryan Woolsey, an All-State player from Pineville, W.Va., scored 19 points to lead VMI. Lawrence Gullette added 11.
