RADFORD FALLS FROM BIG SOUTH LEAD

Ralph Blalock scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Towson State University defeated Radford University 73-63 on Saturday night, taking sole possession of first place in the Big South Conference.

The victory broke a tie in the conference between Towson State (13-7 overall, 8-2 in the Big South) and the Highlanders (13-5, 7-3). It also avenged the Tigers' 82-58 loss to Radford in early January in Virginia.

Towson State broke open the game in the final four minutes.

With 4 minutes, 4 seconds left and the Tigers leading 60-58, Blalock converted a layup off a pass from Scooter Alexander to ignite an 11-0 run that ended with 33 seconds left.

Blalock made nine of 15 field-goal attempts and eight of nine free throws. Alexander added 20 points, and Stevie Thomas scored 12.

Radford was led by Tyrone Travis, who had 20 points. Damian Ingram added 10 points.

"We didn't play particularly well in the first half," said Ron Bradley, the Highlanders' coach. "We didn't move the ball and we couldn't get it inside.

"But we came back against a good Townson State team in the second half. We got good shots. They just didn't go down for us.

"I'm disappointed with the loss. We wanted to get this one, but I'm not disappointed with the effort. We played hard," Bradley added.

Towson State announced Saturday that coach Terry Truax has been suspended by the Big South for one game for his public criticism of an official in Wednesday's game against Maryland-Baltimore County.

Truax will serve the suspension during Monday's game against Liberty University.
