GENERALS MARCH TO WIN BEHIND DYER AND CARTER

Cam Dyer scored 18 points, and Derek Carter added 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington and Lee to a 90-74 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Saturday night in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Carter broke a 17-17 tie late in the first half with a 3-pointer and scored 12 of his points in the first half to lead the Generals (8-11 overall, 5-8 in the ODAC) to a 33-25 lead.

W & L led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Jon Wilcox and Neil Phares each scored 15 for the Royals (2-17, 0-13), who have lost 13 in a row.

The Generals were playing their first game since W & L player Tyler Duvall was hospitalized Wednesday with a form of meningitis. The illness forced the Generals to postpone Wednesday night's game at Virginia Wesleyan so that the team could return to Lexington for precautionary treatment.

\ Old Dominion 97\ James Madison 81

NORFOLK - Petey Sessoms scored 10 of his 13 points in the final 9 minutes, 57 seconds to help the Monarchs pull away for a Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Dukes.

Old Dominion (14-6, 6-2 CAA) got 33 points, nine rebounds and five blocks from Odell Hodge, a former Laurel Park High School standout.

The Monarchs trailed 46-45 at halftime but shot 57 percent in the second half compared to 44 percent for James Madison (13-6, 6-2).

ODU took the lead to stay on a 3-pointer by Sessoms that made it 69-66 with 9:57 remaining. The basket started an 18-6 run that stretched the Monarchs' advantage to 84-72 on a jumper by Mike Jones at the 5:27 mark.

The Dukes got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

Kevin Swann added 15 points for ODU, which also got 13 from Jones.

Clayton Ritter led JMU with 24 points.

\ Richmond 105\ William and Mary 73

WILLIAMSBURG - Michael Hodges had 28 points and 14 rebounds as the Spiders routed the Tribe in the CAA, breaking the century mark for the first time in 13 years.

Hodges had 19 points and nine rebounds as Richmond (8-11, 4-4) bolted to a 57-37 halftime advantage.

William and Mary (2-17, 1-7) never got closer than 15 again.

The Spiders, whose biggest cushion was the final margin, never scored 100 points under coach Dick Tarrant, who retired after last season. Before Saturday, the last time they did it was a 102-79 victory over Virginia State during the 1980-81 season.

Richmond, which had a 51-28 rebounding advantage, also got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Kass Weaver and 11 points from Eugene Burroughs.

Steve Purpura led the Tribe with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Verkey added 15 points and David Cully had 14.

\ Liberty 75\ Md.-Baltimore County 64

BALTIMORE - Matt Hildebrand scored 25 points to help the Flames (10-9, 7-4) hand the Retrievers (5-13, 4-6) their first home loss of the season in the Big South Conference.

After UMBC's Artie Walker hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 52 with 11:45 remaining, Hildebrand put Liberty up for good with a 17-foot jumper at 11:26. He capped a 7-0 run with a 12-foot jumper.

The Flames led by as many as 10 points three times in the first half, but the Retrievers stormed back. Spencer Ferguson's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave UMBC a 39-38 halftime lead.

Jason Dixon added 19 points and nine rebounds for Liberty, and Peter Aluma had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Skip Saunders led the Retrievers with 14 points.

\ East Carolina 83\ George Mason 75

FAIRFAX - Lester Lyons scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the final 5:56 as the Pirates went on a 10-0 run to defeat the Patriots in a CAA game.

East Carolina (12-8, 4-4) won for only the second time in its past six games, snapping a five-game road losing streak. George Mason (8-12, 3-5) has dropped its past two.

The Pirates took a 19-9 lead with 11:13 remaining in the first half. East Carolina led 28-18 when George Mason went on a 14-6 run to pull to 34-32 with 4:27 remaining before halftime.

The Patriots took the lead for the first time at 53-51 when Donald Ross connected on a 3-point basket with 11:53 left in the game. They pushed that margin to 56-51 before the Pirates scored the next seven points.

With the score tied at 60, East Carolina went on a 14-4 run to put the game out of reach.

Wilbert Hunter had 12 points and Curley Young added 10 for the Pirates.

Ross led George Mason with 18 points, Khyl Horton added 14 points and Mark McGlone 12.

\ Ferrum 101\ Methodist 82

FERRUM - Jerry Scarborough scored 26 points and Quincy Quick added 21 as the Panthers powered past the Monarchs in the Dixie Conference.

Ferrum (10-4, 4-4) outscored Methodist 62-45 after halftime.

The Panthers also got 18 points from Albert Hobbs and 13 from John Breedlove.

Stuard Howard led the Monarchs (10-8, 2-6) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tyrone Bennett added 12 points and Gerald Edmonds, Troy Pennington and Kevin Dennison had 11 apiece.

\ Randolph-Macon 75\ Lynchburg 65

LYNCHBURG - Dan Prescott scored 28 points as the Yellow Jackets beat the Hornets in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Randolph-Macon (10-10, 8-6) got 16 points from Nathan Davis and 13 from Kurt Axe.

Otis Tucker led Lynchburg (8-10, 5-7) with 22 points. Ahmad Smalls had 10 points.

Anthony Cummings, who came into the game averaging nearly 19 points and nine rebounds a game, injured a finger in the first half and played only about eight minutes. The former Cave Spring High School standout had eight points and six rebounds.

The Hornets trailed 36-34 at the break, but shot 34 percent (10-for-29) in the second half. Randolph-Macon was 18-of-18 from the free-throw line in the game's final 4 1/2 minutes to pull away.

\ Bridgewater 89\ Emory & Henry 81

EMORY - Jeff Berry went 7-for-9 from 3-point range and scored 34 points to lead the Eagles (13-7, 8-6) past the Wasps (8-10, 6-8) in an ODAC game.

Emory & Henry trailed 44-38 at the half, but closed to 84-81 with 56 seconds remaining. Bridgewater five of six free throws the rest of the way to finish the Wasps.

Dan Rush added 24 points for the Eagles. Dytanyon Norman led Emory & Henry with 26 points.

\ Virginia Wesleyan 65\ Guilford 59

GREENSBORO, N.C. Rick Chalk and James MacLeod each scored 12 points as the Marlins defeated the Quakers in an ODAC matchup.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-11, 6-7) led 42-34 at intermission after going on a 16-5 run in the final 6:31 of the half.

Guilford (7-12, 6-9) scored the first four points of the second half to close to 42-38, but the hosts never got any closer.

Paul Ferrell and Clifton Howard each scored 14 points for the Quakers, and Chad Brown had 11.

Bernard Hynson scored 11 points for the Marlins. Terrence English and Scott Spruill each had 10.

\ Other games

Virginia Union 86, Norfolk State 73: In Norfolk, Warren Peebles scored 25 points and added seven assists as the Panthers stopped the Spartans in a key CIAA game.

Virginia Union (19-2, 14-2), ranked No. 5 in Division II, capitalized on Norfolk State's cold shooting in the first half to lead by as many as 15 points, at 26-11 with 10:47 remaining. Eighth-ranked Norfolk State (17-4, 10-4) missed nine of its first 14 shots as the Panthers took control.

In the second half, the Spartans never got closer than 56-45 with 14:17 remaining. The Panthers then went on a 14-5 run, with Reggie Jones scoring five points, to lead 70-50 with 9:08 left.

Corey Williams had 21 points and 11 rebounds for Norfolk State.

\ St. Paul's 71, Hampton 69: In Lawrenceville, Elvin Edmonds' jumper with seven seconds remaining gave the Tigers (5-14, 4-11) an upset victory over the Pirates (16-6, 11-5) in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

St. Paul's led 41-34 at halftime and held on despite shooting 31 percent from the field in the second half. Hampton led only once in the second half, at 53-52 on a layup by David Saunders with 7:27 remaining. The Tigers scored 10 of the next 13 points.

Saunders finished with 27 points for the Pirates.

\ Averett 108, Greensboro 99: In Greensboro, N.C., Keith Claiborne scored 35 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Cougars to an upset of the Hornets in the Dixie Conference.

Greensboro (18-2, 7-1) came into the game as the top-ranked NCAA Division III team in the South Region, but Claiborne hit 15 of 19 field-goal attempts to lead Averett (10-8, 5-3) to the victory.

Shawn Farmer scored 24 points and Tony Roney added 22 points and six assists for the Cougars.

\ Elizabeth City State 93, Virginia State 84: In Elizabeth City, N.C., Nate Higgs scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Vikings (15-4, 8-2) defeated the Trojans (8-12, 3-5) in the CIAA. Virginia State was led by Todd Peay with 25 points.

\ Longwood 100, Queens (N.C.) 82: In Farmville, Benji Webb had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as the Lancers won their 12th consecutive game. Division II Longwood (15-4) is on its longest winning streak since the 1979-80 season, when the Lancers won 16 in a row as a Division III school.

DeVonne Johnson, who added 12 points, hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 19-second span as Longwood broke open the game with a 17-6 run at the end of the first half.

Queens (10-9) trailed 45-26 at halftime and never got closer than 10 again.

\ Shenandoah 96, N.C. Wesleyan 77: In Winchester, Phil Dixon scored 23 points and had 10 assists as the Hornets (7-12) handled the Battling Bishops (9-9).

Shenandoah broke open a tie game by hitting 24 of 34 field-goal attempts in the second half. Shawn Mobley had 29 points and 10 rebounds for North Carolina Wesleyan.
